Mules are domesticated pack animals. They are sure-footed beasts that can travel through mountains, hills, and dungeons as easily as plains. They are strong and can carry two hundred pounds of gear or rider without being encumbered. They are herbivores and eat grasses, grains, and shrubs. Male and female mules have the same general characteristics.

These animals are wary and balk at strange odors or noises. The howls of wild animals (lions, wolves, etc.) scare them, and unless a skilled animal handler is on hand to calm them, they will bolt in a random direction. Also, mules are afraid of fire and avoid it at all costs.

Mules run from confrontation, but when in melee combat, they can kick with their hind hooves. This attack causes 2d4 damage.

Merchants use mules to pull carts or carry goods. Farmers use them for plowing. Adventures take them into dungeons to haul out treasures. Besides serving as labor or pack animals, smaller humanoids (e.g., sprites and dwarves) use mules as steeds.
